What Is CT-Guided FNAC?

CT-Guided FNAC is an advanced form of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology. In deep areas of the body—such as inside the abdomen, lungs, or behind bones—where standard needles cannot reach, CT scan 3D imaging guides the needle with extreme accuracy.

The CT scanner scans the patient and calculates the precise 3D coordinates of the lesion. Following these coordinates, an interventional radiologist uses an ultra-fine needle to collect fluid or cell samples directly from lesions in the lungs or deep abdominal lymph nodes, which are then sent for pathology lab testing.

Why Do Doctors Recommend This Test?

Lung Mass or Nodule

If there is a suspicious infection, nodule, or suspected spread of cancer in the lungs that cannot be reached using standard bronchoscopy, CT-guided FNAC is recommended.

Deep abdominal lymph nodes and liver

Preparation Before the Test

Blood Tests & Coagulation Profile

Before the test, you must bring your blood clotting test reports (PT with INR, CBC, and Platelets). Blood-thinning medications (such as Aspirin or Warfarin) must be temporarily stopped 5 to 7 days prior to the procedure under doctor guidance.

4 to 6 Hours Fasting

For abdominal FNAC procedures, patients are usually asked to fast for 4–6 hours to reduce bowel movements, eliminate gas, and prepare for contrast dye use if required.

Serum Creatinine & Previous CT Scans

To ensure kidney health and clearance for contrast dye use, bring your Serum Creatinine test report along with any previous X-ray or CT scan films.

Bring an Attendant & Dress Code

You may experience mild dizziness or effects from local anesthesia after the procedure. For safety, bring a family member with you and wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal buttons.
