What Is a CT Scan and Why Is It Done?

Basic concepts and procedure of Computed Tomography or CT Scan.

What Is a CT Scan?

A Computed Tomography (CT) Scan is an imaging test that takes multiple X-ray images from different angles around the body and uses a computer to combine them into highly detailed, three-dimensional (3D) images.

A standard X-ray provides only a two-dimensional or flat image. However, a CT scan can show deep, highly detailed, cross-sectional (slice-by-slice) images of bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues inside the body.

Why Do Doctors Recommend a CT Scan?

Emergency Injuries & Internal Bleeding

Doctors primarily prescribe a CT scan to quickly detect internal bleeding, brain hemorrhage (stroke), or complex bone fractures in accident patients.

Lung & Chest Examination

A chest CT or HRCT Chest is recommended to confirm lung cancer, pneumonia, fluid in the lungs, TB (tuberculosis), or blood vessel blockages.

Tumors & Abdominal Complications

A CT scan is essential to accurately evaluate infections in the liver, kidneys, pancreas, or appendix, as well as the spread of tumors or cancer anywhere in the body.

Preparation Before the Test

Serum Creatinine Test

If you require a contrast (special dye) CT scan, you must first do a blood test to confirm that your kidney function is normal.

Fasting

If contrast dye is being used, you must avoid any heavy food or drinks for at least 4 to 6 hours before the test.

Avoid Metallic Objects & Jewelry

Metal objects on the body, such as jewelry, hairpins, chains, or metal belts, interfere with X-rays. Therefore, they must be removed before entering the examination room.

Pregnancy or Other Medical Conditions

CT scans are generally avoided for pregnant women. Inform your doctor beforehand if you are pregnant, or if you have asthma, diabetes, or thyroid problems.

Unique Advantage of CT Scan in Emergencies

5 - 10

Minutes Required (Scan Time)

When Speed and Accuracy Are Critical
An MRI test can typically take 30 to 45 minutes or longer, which can be difficult for critical or restless patients. However, a CT scan can be completed in just 5 to 10 minutes.

It quickly scans internal structures and provides fast reporting, giving doctors a massive advantage in making immediate, life-saving decisions for road accident or emergency brain stroke patients.
