What is an ETT Test and Why is it Done?

Scientific Importance of Diagnosing Heart Disease Through Physical Exertion and Treadmill Testing

What Actually is an ETT Test?

ETT (Exercise Tolerance Test / Treadmill Test) is a modern diagnostic test for heart disease. During this test, the patient’s ECG and blood pressure are monitored while walking or running on a treadmill machine.

No harmful radioactivity or radiation is used in this test. It is a completely non-invasive and safe procedure.

Why Do Doctors Recommend an ETT?

Detecting Heart Disease (CAD)

Blockages in blood vessels often go undetected while at rest. An ETT is performed to accurately verify whether blood flow to the heart is adequate during physical exertion.

Determining the Cause of Chest Pain

To identify the exact cause and severity of chest pain, pressure, or sudden shortness of breath experienced during walking or physical exertion.

Evaluating Heart Capacity

To assess how effectively the heart is functioning after bypass surgery or stenting, and to evaluate the patient's physical endurance.

Preparation Before the Test

Fasting

Avoid heavy meals at least 3 to 4 hours before the test. A light meal may be consumed if advised by your doctor.

Wear Loose Clothing

Wear comfortable cotton clothes and sports sneakers (sports shoes) for ease of walking or running.

Medication Guidelines

As instructed by your physician, certain heart or blood pressure medications may need to be temporarily stopped 1–2 days prior to the test.

Bring Previous Reports

Bring all previous medical files, especially recent ECG and Echocardiogram (Echo) reports.

Side Effects or Radiation

Completely Non-Invasive & Safe:

No harmful radiation rays or injections/needles are used in an ETT test. Only the electrical signals of the heart and blood pressure are monitored during physical exertion.

A specialist physician and an experienced technician maintain continuous supervision throughout the test, making it an exceptionally safe diagnostic procedure.

Do you have any questions?

ETT is an essential test for early detection of heart disease risk and proper medical management. If there are any abnormalities in your ETT report, consult a specialist physician without delay.
