What Is a Duplex Study and Why Is It Done?

Modern diagnostic testing for evaluating blood circulation and internal blood vessel function.

What Is a Duplex Study?

A Duplex Study (Duplex Ultrasound) is a dual-imaging test. It combines traditional ultrasound (which displays blood vessel structure and size) with Doppler ultrasound (which shows the speed and direction of blood flow inside vessels).

Using Color Doppler technology, oxygenated bright red arterial blood flow and deoxygenated dark blue venous blood flow are clearly displayed live on screen, detecting any blockages immediately.

Why Do Doctors Recommend a Duplex Study?

DVT and Blood Clots

It is the gold-standard test used to quickly identify Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)—blood clots in the legs—especially in bedridden patients or those with leg swelling.

Carotid Arteries and Stroke Risk

It accurately checks for blockages in the carotid arteries of the neck, which can impair blood flow to the brain and increase stroke risk.

Varicose Veins and Diabetes

It is used to evaluate twisted, swollen veins (Varicose Veins) and diagnose Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) or reduced leg circulation in diabetic patients.

Preparation Before the Test

No Preparation Needed for Arm or Leg Scans

If you are having a Duplex Study on your arms or legs (Upper/Lower Limbs), you can eat normally and take your regular medications. No fasting is required.

Fasting Required for Abdominal Scans

If evaluating kidney blood vessels (Renal Duplex) or main abdominal blood vessels (Abdominal Duplex), fast for at least 6 to 8 hours before the test to reduce intestinal gas.

Avoid Smoking and Nicotine

Avoid smoking, tea, or coffee for at least 2 to 3 hours prior to the test. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, which can lead to inaccurate readings or altered blood velocity.

Wear Loose Cotton Clothing

Wear loose, comfortable cotton clothing so the targeted area can be easily accessed. You will need to lie still and relaxed during the examination.

Simple Sound Wave Technology for Measuring Blood Circulation

A Duplex Study is completely non-invasive and safe. Like standard ultrasound, it uses painless, high-frequency sound waves rather than harmful radiation.

  • Sound Wave Echoing: Sound waves emitted by the transducer bounce off red blood cells flowing inside the blood vessels.

  • Speed and Direction Mapping: Changes in reflected sound waves are processed by a computer to precisely calculate blood flow velocity and direction.

  • Completely Safe and Comfortable: The procedure involves no radiation, needles, or injections, and is completely painless.

Do you have any questions?

A Duplex Study is an advanced, safe imaging test to detect vascular blockages and blood clots. If you experience sudden leg swelling or severe pain, consult your physician promptly.
