What Is an FOL Test and Why Is It Done?

Modern technology for analyzing internal conditions of the vocal cords, pharynx, and larynx.

What Is an FOL Test?

FOL (Fiberoptic Laryngoscopy) is an advanced ENT diagnostic procedure. A very thin, flexible fiberoptic cable with a camera is passed through the nose into the upper airway to view the vocal cords, larynx, and throat directly on a monitor in real time.

A local anesthetic spray (numbing spray) is applied to the nose and throat before the examination. No surgical incisions or cuts are needed, ensuring the procedure is completely painless.

Why Do Doctors Recommend an FOL Test?

Voice Changes and Hoarseness

If hoarseness or voice changes persist for more than 2 to 3 weeks, an FOL test helps evaluate for vocal cord nodules, polyps, cysts, or early-stage lesions.

Sensation of Something Stuck in the Throat

It helps identify the precise cause of a lump-in-throat feeling (globus sensation), difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), or persistent, excessive mucus accumulation.

Chronic Cough and Throat Pain

It provides a clear view to evaluate deep, persistent throat pain, unexplained bleeding, or structural abnormalities near the larynx and thyroid area.

Preparation Before the Test

Fasting Guidelines

Avoid food and heavy liquids for at least 2 to 3 hours prior to the test to prevent nausea or gag reflexes during the procedure.

Disclose Allergies and Medications

Inform your physician beforehand if you have a history of allergic reactions to local anesthetic sprays (such as Lignocaine) or other medications.

Nasal Hygiene and Sprays

Keep your nose clean. Your doctor may administer a decongestant nasal spray shortly before the test to open up the nasal passages for smoother insertion.

Bring Previous Medical Records

Bring along previous ENT prescriptions, chest or neck X-rays, and any relevant medical reports for the specialist to review.

Diagnostic Accuracy and Reliability

95%

Accuracy Rate in Detecting Laryngeal Conditions

Using high-definition flexible fiberoptic camera technology, internal conditions of the throat, vocal cords, and larynx can be precisely evaluated without surgery. The internal structures are assessed rapidly and accurately without complications.

  • Up to 95% Diagnostic Accuracy: High-definition flexible scope technology yields a success rate of nearly 95% in accurately diagnosing vocal cord polyps, nodules, inflammation, or structural lesions.
  • Painless and Non-Invasive: Using a local anesthetic spray allows complete evaluation of internal throat tissues without any surgical cuts or bleeding, making it virtually risk-free.
  • Quick Procedure (5–10 Minutes): The entire examination is fast and typically completed in just 5 to 10 minutes.

Do you have any questions?
