Complete guide to preparation, necessities, and estimated costs of USG tests in Bangladesh
Ultrasonography (USG) is a modern diagnostic method that sends ultra-high-frequency sound waves (inaudible to the human ear) into the body to bounce off soft tissues, creating detailed images from the echoes.
Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasonography uses no harmful radiation, making it completely safe for newborns, children, and pregnant mothers.
It is used to check fetal health, monitor baby position, weight, and amniotic fluid levels, as well as perform anomaly scans to detect congenital conditions.
Doctors primarily prescribe USG to identify fatty liver, gallstones, bile duct blockages, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, kidney stones, and appendicitis.
When ultrasound is used to monitor heart blood flow and valve movement, it is called Echocardiography; when used for checking blood vessel blockages, it is called Color Doppler.
If you are having an Upper Abdomen or Gallbladder ultrasound, you must fast for 6 to 8 hours before the test (no heavy food; water is allowed).
For pelvic or pregnancy scans (Lower Abdomen), hold your urine. A full bladder provides a clear view of the uterus and pelvic organs.
Loose, comfortable cotton clothes make it easier to expose the target area in the room. Inform the doctor beforehand if you have any metal implants/devices.
Bringing past USG reports helps the doctor compare current findings with previous results easily.
| Test Description | Government Hospital | Private Diagnostic Center |
|---|---|---|
| USG of Whole Abdomen | ৳ 400 - ৳ 800 | ৳ 1200 - ৳ 2500 |
| USG of Pregnancy (Routine Pregnancy USG) | ৳ 300 - ৳ 500 | ৳ 1000 - ৳ 1500 |

| USG Pregnancy Anomaly Scan (Detailed Fetal Scan) | ৳ 800 - ৳ 1200 | ৳ 1800 - ৳ 3000 |
Note: The cost may vary slightly depending on the variations in 4D or 3D anomaly scans, the expertise of the consultant, and the model/version of the advanced sonography machine.
Uses 100% Natural Sound Waves
Among all medical imaging tests, ultrasonography is the only one that is 100% radiation-free and non-invasive (done without any needles).
Even with repeated scans, it causes no harmful radiation effects on body tissues or your unborn child. Because of this high level of safety, doctors recommend that pregnant mothers undergo 3 to 4 scans—or more if needed—throughout their pregnancy.
Before coming for your ultrasonography, please make sure to follow your doctor’s instructions—either drink enough water to keep your bladder full or arrive on an empty stomach, as advised.
