What Is an FNAC Test and Why Is It Performed?

Microscopic cell analysis using a fine needle without cutting any tissue, organ, or tumor.

What Is an FNAC Test?

FNAC stands for Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology. A needle—even finer than a standard injection needle—is inserted into a visible or hidden lump, swelling, or tumor to collect cellular fluid.

A standard biopsy requires cutting into the tissue to take a larger piece, which can be painful and requires surgery. In contrast, an FNAC test involves no surgical incision and quickly collects cell fluid through a minor needle insertion.

Why Do Doctors Recommend This Test?

Thyroid Gland Enlargement

If the thyroid gland in the neck becomes abnormally enlarged (Goiter) or a hard lump is felt in the neck, FNAC is the primary diagnostic step to determine whether it is a simple cyst or a tumor.

Breast Lumps

If a lump or mass is found in a woman's breast, FNAC is a highly reliable test to confirm whether it is a benign fluid-filled cyst or a malignant cancer.

Swollen Lymph Nodes

When lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin swell, an FNAC test is performed to microscopically check for tuberculosis (TB), routine infections, or cancer spread.

Preparation Before the Test

No Fasting Required

You do not need to fast for an FNAC test. Patients can eat and drink normally before visiting the lab.

Caution With Blood-Thinning Medications

If you regularly take Aspirin or other blood thinners, you may need to pause them 3 to 5 days prior to the procedure under doctor guidance. Inform the technician before the test begins.

Avoid Anxiety and Mental Stress

This is a simple outpatient (OPD) procedure. Aside from a minor prick similar to a routine injection, no severe pain occurs and local anesthesia is rarely needed. Stay calm and relaxed.

Ultrasound Guidance for USG-Guided FNAC

If the lump is non-palpable from the outside, ultrasound guidance (USG-Guided FNAC) is used to locate the exact position. In such cases, bring any previous ultrasound or X-ray films with you.

Safe & Rapid Diagnosis

95%

Cancer Cell Detection Accuracy Rate

Simple 10–15 minute procedure with high diagnostic precision.

The biggest advantage of an FNAC test is that it avoids time-consuming surgical procedures. The entire process is quick, simple, and virtually painless for patients:

  • Quick & Simple Sample Collection: Cell samples are drawn using a fine needle in just 10 to 15 minutes, with no surgical cuts required.

  • Up to 95% Diagnostic Precision: Modern cytopathology analysis identifies whether a lump is benign or malignant with 95% accuracy.

  • Completely Safe & Painless: No hospitalization or general anesthesia is required, offering a safe diagnostic process with reliable reporting.

Do you have any questions?
